60. Do you prefer to be alone or to be with friends? ( 5 - 6 )
I prefer to be with my friends. Please allow me to explain. At work I spend most of my time alone in my office. So after work I like the company of other people. I often invite some of my friends over, and we listen to our favorite music, or just chat the whole evening.

Sometimes I prefer to be alone. For example, after a hard day at work I just want to relax without anybody disturbing me. Those are the times that I might meditate on the meaning of life for example, or just savour some fond memories. On the other hand, sometimes I want to be with my friends. For example, over weekends, I like to go out with them and enjoy their stimulating company.

I know the different characters well by now, some whom I love, and some whom I hate. 63. What do you usually do when you go out? ( 7 - 8 )
One of the aspects I could tell you about regarding this topic is that I usually go to watch a football game with some of my friends. It describes the history from the very first days, up to the present. It covers all aspects of the country, but focuses on the people of the country. In addition, however, it also signifies the obscene, as apposed to blue in the most of the western cultures. For example, here a blue movie, would be called a yellow movie. Never assume you’ve failed in IELTS

We have discussed in the past how important it is to be psychologically prepared for IELTS and I’d like to go back to that discussion. It happens to many people during their exam that something unexpected happens and they panic. Some test takers even assume they have failed (without even knowing it for sure) and naturally that affects their performance.

Here are a couple of a real life examples (the names are not real, but the stories are).

Alan wrote me a letter and asked: “I was in the middle of my Speaking exam, answering the Cue card and after I have talked for what felt to me like 2 minutes, I stopped. I was sitting there in silence until the examiner gave me a sign to continue because obviously he wanted me to keep going. Do you think that will significantly affect my score?”

I thought that this incident shouldn’t affect the score because Alan picked up right after the examiner asked him to continue. To verify my guess Alan and I agreed that when he gets his score, he’ll let me know. Alan got 8 in Speaking (no, he is not a native speaker)! If he had panicked and messed up the rest of his test, there is no way his score would have been anywhere near Band 8.

Sandra sent me an email and asked: “I have written an off-topic essay. I misunderstood the topic and wrote about something related, but different. Have I failed, how much marks will I lose?”.

I do know that writing off-topic is penalized, but have no idea how many marks exactly are deducted. Sandra and I decided to conduct a little experiment, I asked how much does she think the essay would get assuming it was on topic, she said 6.5 – 7 and agreed to let me know her score when it arrives. Her Writing score was Band 6, which probably means that the assessor deducted between 0.5 and 1 Band for the off-topic penalty.

What I’m trying to say here is this: it’s not over until it’s over. There are parts of the IELTS assessment that are confidential and in many cases we may think that something will ruin our score when in fact it may affect it a little or not at all.

IELTS is simple

More you concentrate more simple and easy it is. IELTS is not tough as i thought before my exams it was a preparation of 15 days all cool and relaxed way.

I just learned few things

READING:First have a look on all questions and then read paragraph simultaneously mark the lines which you found is related to question.Makes easy and saves time. And i scored 7.5

LISTENING:Try out 20-30 tapes concentrate if u miss any where you will automatically loose rest of conversation thinking about what you left. When they give time to read tick the main in question and as conversation starts it is easy to point out.In this way i secured 9.00

WRITING:Short one is clear consider each and every point and mention in a related fashion to make understand quickly so that if a person reads he can draw same picture as it is.Long essay it depends on your sentence formation and remember no spelling mistakes you will surely loose points and dont try to be too complex. If you get an essay where you have two opposite ideas like DEATH PENALTY SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTED OR NOT then if you have points for both then mention both the side of the topic but conclusion should be what exactly you think about it.
Well i dont think i am too perfect in this may be thats why i secured 7.00

SPEAKING:It is really cool part of exam. You get more scared for this where you need not to because the interviewer makes you relaxed and then start. You need not give any logical answer, be yourself say your feelings and dont use too many quotes.
Question will be like your personal profile, your ambition, place you like most, your childhood, person you like most and why, etc.
And i secured 8.00

I hope this will help you formost thing dont get scared be cool then ball is in your court you will not miss even single point. All the best for all you who is about to take IELTS

Apply these in the IELTS Test to get a good score

I got 6 in Speaking & Reading and 7 in Listening & Writing with an overall band score of 7.5. Having already written on "How to prepare for IELTS to get good score", today I'll unleash some tips and tricks that should be applied in the IELTS test to get a good score. Though all the tips are written in the IELTS books, I would mention only the key important ones.

LISTENING SECTION: The listening section is the first to cope up in the test. Usually, one is anxious and a bit worried in the start of the test. But then, it's quite natural. What I want to emphasize is that enough anxiety can actually ruin your listening test.......as it's just a 30 minute endeavour....and one needs to be very vigilant and mentally relaxed. For being composed in the initial part of the test, you should have enough confidence.....and that comes by enough practice and/or satisfaction with your listening skills. (Remember, you need to be cool all the time and not get distracted if someone is coughing next to you... hahaha) Now....there are 4 listening passages with around 10 questions in each passage. Each passage is read once. First of all, you are given time to read the questions.......and then the audio is played. You have to put in the answers while the passage is being played. Remember, usually the answers to the questions come in line....i.e. the answer to the first question comes first and then comes the answer to the second question. But read and try to remember all questions before the possage is played. As I said, the answer to the first question comes first............but always remain alert to receive the answer to the second or third question first as.....you may miss the answer to the first question. READING SECTION: Three passages and one hour. Perhaps, I believe, that a medical person should not have all that difficulty dealing with this section......as we ppl do a lot of quick reading in our lifes. Anyways, TIME MANAGEMENT is very important in this section. Give 15-18 minutes to each reading passage. After each passage, copy the answers in the answer sheet. Dont keep this work for the end....you never know what will happen once time starts to dwindle. Now there are around 13-14 questions per passage. There are different types of question: fill in the blanks, yes/no/not given, choose the best, give titles to the paragraphs. Now, lets suppose in a certain passage, there are 4 yes/no/not givens, 4 choose the best, 3 fill in the blanks and 4 give title to paragraphs. When you get the reading passages, always read the question first. In this section also, 99% of the time, answers come in line i.e. the answer to the first question comes first and then comes the answer to the second question. So, when you are reading the questions, try to remember the first 2 of each variety of questions that you get. Once you have read the questions, now start reading the passage. Remember; try to pot in the answers as you read the questions. But "title to paragraphs" questions are solved once you have fully read the passage. Now, as I said, the answer to the first question (of each variety of questions) comes first..........but you may miss an answer.......so always try to remember the first 2 questions of each variety of questions. In case of yes/no/not given, try to remember the first 3 questions......as may be the first 2 might not be there in the passage....(not given ones)....so the first answer you receive might be the the third one.......(not later than this). Now, as you put in the answers, try to remember the next question of that variety as that would come next. (Remember, time management is very important. For practice, try reading quickly and try to grasp and memorize as much as you can.) WRITING SECTION: Two tasks.....a 20 minute task and a 40 minute task. I won't write much about this section......only the very important points that you should never forget. Word limit......150 for the 20 minute task and 250 for the 40 minute task......is only the minimum limit. Maximum: you can write as many words as you want. This is very true. But this is also true, that to score highly in any respect.......you should be to the point. Now I wrote 450 words in the 40 minute task.......a sheer stupidity, because the more I wrote....the more I gave them to pick out mistakes from. Plus, I think I should have put a little more effort on my hand-writing....... it's just like AFRIDI...on its day, it can be the best......yet on other days, it's the worst. So my advice would be......dont try to write too much more than the minimum limit & try to maintain a neat and clean handwriting. A good introduction and a good conclusion is the key to getting good marks in writing section. Grammar should be correct at all times. Dont try to be over smart...I mean dont try to write with a touch of complexity unless you can write with correct grammar. SPEAKING: Everything matters..... fluency, grammar, posture, dressing, confidence and a smile on face etc. Remember, the examiner sitting there would only give a recommendation. The tape is forwarded to a panel of examiners later....who give marks on your conversation skills. One important point......speed doesn't matter....what matters is fluency and good grammar. If you are speaking at a speed of 90......but you are hesitating time and again.......you are sure to lose. But if you are speaking at a speed of 20...but you are very fluent and have good grammar.....you are through. Whenever you are asked a question......take a couple of seconds to think before you answer. In this couple of seconds, you can just give a smile to the examiner and change your posture.

Tutorial on Writing an Essay for IELTS

Seems as though most of you are bored with reading ready essay samples accompanied with help-me-correct-this appeals. You have been learning English and would rather look into the innards of essay creation process to get something useful for your own improvement. So would I.

I’d like to present my strategy to go about essay writing. If you do not like, tell me why. If you do, I am glad to be helpful.

Well, here is the task I found in a textbook on IELTS .

Enormous effort is put into researching and marketing 'the perfect potato crisp' while research into stress at work, for example, is ignored. How important are staff working conditions? Should employers research and improve the working conditions of their staff or should they concentrate more on their product?

The question as it stands implies you should speculate about what comes first – product or workers?
So it is an opinion essay.

If you decided on an opinion essay, give it a proper structure.

1) Introduction is a must. You don’t believe you could get a good grade without introduction, do you?
2) 3 paragraphs are also necessary – three is a magical number. It can do wonders to your overall band score.
3) Conclusion. You do not want to infuse your examiner with a feeling of incompleteness.

-------------------------------------------
My opinions
-------------------------------------------
I will try to be positive about work force. They really deserve to be cared about. I hope you feel the same. Some scholars call it brainstorming. Let’s storm our brains.

First of all, you should not wander off trying to find ideas in the darkest parts of your mind. We will get some obvious hints right from the assignment.

“Enormous effort is put into researching and marketing 'the perfect potato crisp'…” – Brilliant!
“research into stress at work, for example, is ignored …” – Could not be stated better!
“How important are staff working conditions?...” – Oh! We know what you are up to. Of course they are!“Should employers research and improve the working conditions of their staff?” - Lots of thanks, you’ve been most helpful providing
ideas.“… should they concentrate more on their product?...”- Devious, but thank you anyway for bringing it up again.

I think they have already written the better part of the essay. We should only rephrase these expressions to avoid the offence of plagiarism.

Inquisitive minds will easily complete the list of ideas with their own suggestions. Hard thinkers like myself might as well stop brainstorming right here.

I know, I know – you are going to blame me for this, because it is not sufficient to develop 3 paragraphs.
But brainstorming never ends. I am far from assuming that you will stop thinking after 5 minutes of initial excessive brain work and will begin writing down words in mechanical way dreaming of buying a new car.
There is also vocabulary building part, and you have a clear structure of your essay.

Opinion = in support of workers

Introduction – topic and opinion in short
Paragraph 1 - staff working conditions are important
Paragraph 2 - employers should research and improve the working conditions
Paragraph 3 - concentrating more on their product is bad
Conclusion – short summary of paragraphs

Rephrasing ideas
-------------------------------------------
In my opinion, it is the hardest part. It is about your vocabulary, so nothing we can do but remember some basic expressions. If you get stuck, just write down whatever comes to your mind looking at the key words of the assignment. You will sort it out later on. Some of the words you will insert into sentences, the rest will stay untouched. It surely pays off; you would not bother thinking of necessary vocabulary as you write.

Example vocabulary

Key words:

research analyze, explore, inquire, investigate, look into, study
marketing advertising, promoting, pushing products
working condition situation, state, work load
stress at work pressure, nervous tension, difficulty, hardness, strain
ignore disregard, do not take into account, close the eyes to
employers managers, bosses
staff work force, personnel, employees
concentrate on the product consider closely, direct attention, fix attention, focus, give attention

do a lot of damage to overall productivity

Introduction.

Earlier, we agreed to fight against staff overload. Let state the problem and introduce our opinion.
(Simply speaking, let’s rewrite the assignment).

Nowadays, most businesses concerned primarily with improving and pushing products at all costs, therefore neglecting the strain this strategy puts on their personnel. I believe it is of vital importance to restrain excessive work load. I also think employers should pay more attention to organizing friendly working environment for their employees.

OK, it is sleeping time… I am tired and will have no more of this nonsense.
If you are not satisfied call my customer service, otherwise look forward to the next part – Paragraphs.

P.S. I might be absolutely wrong. Feel free to destroy my carefully thought-out system, but don’t forget to suggest something more useful instead. I will appreciate if you supply supporting ideas for the paragraphs of the essay according to my plan.

----------------------------------------
PARAGRAPHS …
----------------------------------------
Sounds frightening… But we’ll make it if we follow simple rules.

The first rule - KEEP IT AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE

Be practical – simple ideas come easy and take less effort to develop.
Don’t be tempted to amaze your examiner with profound knowledge of slang, idioms and pedantic words. Different styles, used in one essay, may produce a funny alienating mixture. Of course, I wouldn’t vote for dull writing. A bit of variety never hurts.

The second rule – DEVELOP YOUR PARAGRAPHS

A good paragraph must have
1) Topic sentence (statement)
2) Arguments – 3 arguments advisable, each followed by
3) Supporting details
4) Transition words and markers

To illustrate this, let’s suppose a model task.

How could I make you put off by my repulsive appearance? I really need to be persuasive.

I could arrange it in order of development steps.

----------------------------------------
THE WORST
----------------------------------------
I am ugly (only statement, undeveloped - no arguments, no supporting details).

----------------------------------------
SLIGHTLY BETTER
----------------------------------------
I am ugly. I am old, bald and untidy (statement, 3 arguments, no supporting details)

----------------------------------------
MUCH BETTER
----------------------------------------
Statement - I am ugly.

Argument1 - I am old.
Supporting detail 1 - I was born before the World War II.

Argument 2 - I am bald.
Supporting detail 2 - You could see your reflection in the top of my head.

Argument 3 - I am untidy.
Supporting detail 3 - I have dirty marks all over my clothes.

Summary
(The gaps are here to be filled in with additional words that make your writing smooth or cohesive.)

… I am ugly. … I am old. I was born before the World War Two. … I am bald. You could see your reflection in the top of my head. … I am untidy. I have dirty marks all over my clothes.

----------------------------------------
THE BEST
----------------------------------------
(transition words and markers added)

In my opinion, I am ugly. First of all, I am old. I was born before the World War II. Secondly, I am bald. You could see your reflection in the top of my head. Finally, I am untidy. I have dirty marks all over my clothes.

Of course, you may go further and link a pair “argument – example” into one sentence using additional transitions, but it would not change the idea of the paragraph and, therefore, up to you to decide.

OK, let’s go on to our task and apply our strategy to the first paragraph.

----------------------------------------
Task
----------------------------------------
Enormous effort is put into researching and marketing 'the perfect potato crisp' while research into stress at work, for example, is ignored. How important are staff working conditions? Should employers research and improve the working conditions of their staff or should they concentrate more on their product?

Introduction

Nowadays, most businesses are concerned primarily with improving and pushing products at all costs, therefore neglecting the strain this strategy puts on their personnel. I believe it is of vital importance to restrain excessive work load. I also think employers should pay more attention to organizing friendly working environment for their employees.

First paragraph

In my point of view, conditions that employers provide for their personnel are very important. Fist of all, uncomfortable offices affect the pace of work. Extra efforts to keep everything organized may become the biggest time wasters. Secondly, inconvenient timetables influence labour productivity. Repetitive long hours at work get workers exhausted. Finally, relations between managers and employees matter. Unfriendly atmosphere undermine self-esteem, co-operation and ability of staff to come up with creative ideas.

Timing issues and MY ESSAY

Time could kill your essay as well as bad structure and poor vocabulary. But do not try to kill time yourself. Allow no more than a minute for panicking, sweating and jittering, then stop. Has it put down a single word for you? I guess no.

If at the end of your panicking session the only sentence that comes to your mind is “What am I going to do?” look at your watch. Notice down the time. Set 10 minutes for completing what I have already described in my first post. I strongly advise you against exceeding the 10-minute limit for this part. No use trying to cram down a further lot of information if you have no time to develop it. What is done is done. Take the next step – paragraphs.

Another 30 minutes should be wisely distributed. Time you will spend on each paragraph depends on your ability to produce consistent chunks of text approximately 50 – 70 words in length. The words left to build up a 250 word essay might be divided between the introduction and conclusion. In my case it takes about 7-8 minutes per paragraph.

Several minutes (6 to 9) to the deadline might be devoted to writing a short conclusion and proofreading

Well, that’s how it works.

Actually, I didn’t try to work against the clock since I had been writing this essay on separate occasions. But I have done it for educational purposes and it has proved itself viable under time pressure.

Essay

Nowadays, most businesses are concerned primarily with improving and pushing products at all costs, therefore neglecting the strain this strategy puts on their personnel. I believe it is of vital importance to restrain excessive work load. I also think employers should pay more attention to organizing friendly working environment for their employees.

In my point of view, conditions that employers provide for their personnel are very important. First of all, uncomfortable offices affect the pace of work. Finally, relations between managers and employees matter. Unfriendly atmosphere undermine self-esteem, co-operation and ability of staff to come up with creative ideas.

I convinced that researching and improving employees working conditions is rewarding. To begin with, improving workplace is an integral part of effective personnel policy. It helps a company become the employer of choice for skilled workers. Furthermore, neglecting to monitor the wellness of staff leads to extra expenses since more workers would use the insurance plan. Finally, businesses seeking efficiency should gather information on the latest advances in work space ergonomics. Strong competition forces employers to upgrade staff work areas to boost the performance of staff.

I also feel that concentrating solely on the product is ineffective. For one thing, marketing, even most aggressive, would not make the product any better. “The perfect potato crisp” results from the work of well-trained staff. For another, companies overlooking workers’ needs in favour of merchandise are unstable. Staff retention problems restrain the company’s potential to come regularly on the marker with new offers. At last, neglecting staff damages the reputation of a manufacturer. Customers might refuse buying a product, if they know it is made through hard exploitation of workers.

To summarize, employers should accept working conditions as being very important to successful company development. Disregarding researching and improving working conditions undermines enormous effort put into promotion of the product.

That’s it for my tutorial. You should be aware that I am neither a teacher nor a native speaker of English.
I have just laid out the strategy originated from my experience and textbooks on IELTS . It helped me overcome “an essay block” and I hope it will do you good as well.

Tips for passing the IELTS exam

1. The preparation time is important. I think u should devote at least 15 days.

Study at least 2-3 hrs. For the reading part. I have collected the previous editorial pages of an English newspaper and have read at least 5 pages daily. This is a very good practice. You should not only try to read this speedily but also try to remember as much you can.

2. Apart from solving the usual Cambridge books I’ll recommend you `HOW TO PREPARE FOR IELTS` by British press.

This book contains some really difficult passages. Try one passage at a time. Don’t panic if you get even half of the questions wrong for the first time. I was able to get only 8 out of the 14 first times. Once you are able to solve around 10 out of 13/14 you are definitely through.

3. Whenever you solve a practice paper always solve your wrong ones first before switching to the next test.

There are always some confusing questions especially the true/false ones. You must get the right answer by discussing with your friends or tutor. You’ll see the difference even after your first discussion.

Don’t worry this much about the exam. It’s really an easy exam. But the band scores for the your right responses given in insight into IELTS are true i.e. you have to score about 30-32 to get a 7 in listening. But listening is usually very easy. One piece of advice is to go for the IDP as they provide you with the earphones making the process even easier. The master advice if you still feel apprehensive is that in the morning of the test listens BBC for 1-2 hrs. And then go straight to the exam. You’ll be acclimatized to the British English and listening is usually the first part.

Writing is also very easy. Topics are such that anybody can write a story about them. Just don’t make grammar or spelling mistakes. Write simple sentences and simple words. Examiner should be able to understand what you are trying to convey. If you are giving the examples try to give them in international context. Indian context will do but international one is better. E.g. I got the topic that these days there is much violence in movies and TV. Do you think that government should take steps to contain this. I have given example of the use of Tommy guns by American school children under the influence of movies. Hope you have got the point. Also be sure to write 150/250 words. A, an and the are not counted as words. So exclude them while counting.

Facts Not Many People Know

There are many aspects in IELTS that people find surprising, usually when it hits them hard. It is quite a paradox – the information is right there, available to everyone, yet people are still in the dark. Allow me to draw your attention to several facts you don’t want to be surprised about.

Usually extensive answer is considered a very good one, but not in IELTS. When instructions say “give one answer” or “answer in 3 words”, it means “give us two answers or 4 words and we’ll fail you”. The reason for this limit is quite simple and obvious – there is not enough room for more than 3 words on Answer Sheet. By the way, articles “a” and “the” count as one word, while common assumption is that they don’t.

People tend to forget that they are graded by Answer Sheet and not by what they wrote in IELTS booklet. Any correct answer not copied to Answer Sheet will result in exactly 0 points. There is an option of submitting appeal and requesting to read your answers from the booklet, but it takes time and costs money.

Not many people think about what they are going to write with, pen or pencil. Yet there are rules: the Listening and Reading answers are to be written in pencil and Writing - in pen. This is another example of how small details can be very significant in IELTS.

Writing and Speaking are graded differently from Listening and Reading. There is no half band grade, which means it is impossible to get 6.5 in either Writing or Speaking. The reason is the way examiners are currently trained, but hopefully it will change in the future (according to official IELTS site maybe even in 2007).

In Reading and Listening tests the spelling is important, meaning one can loose points for misspelled words. The best way to overcome the spelling problem is to copy words. In case of Reading, copying words from text is a very easy and natural thing to do. In Listening test, as simple as it may sound, it is best to write what you hear and not to rephrase. It is acceptable to skip words – after all there is 3 words limit, as long as the important words are not substituted by their synonyms.

And at last some good news: starting from May 2006 candidates don’t need to wait 90 days to retake the test. The 90-day waiting period has been canceled to the joy of those who have no time to waste.
